Water, snacks, a jacket – and a rubbish bag: A new summer campaign in the Czech Republic is encouraging people to collect small pieces of litter while out in nature. The initiative is organised by the Ukliďme Česko project and outdoor retailer 4camping.

The idea is simple: Anyone who picks up and takes away a few discarded bottles, cans or food wrappers while out and about can help create a cleaner environment with very little effort. The organisers want to show that even small gestures can make a noticeable difference.

During the summer holidays, the two partners will publish a total of four interactive challenges across their social media channels. Anyone can take part. All participants need to do is bring a rubbish bag on an outing, collect a few pieces of litter and post a photo with the filled bag underneath the relevant competition post.

A small bag can make a big difference

"We don't expect people to collect tonnes of rubbish," says Miroslav Kubásek from the Ukliďme Česko association. Instead, the aim is to encourage a simple habit. If everyone took a few extra pieces of litter home after a trip, it could significantly improve the appearance of the countryside.

For the campaign, 4camping has introduced a lightweight, reusable rubbish bag that can be attached to a backpack. However, this product is not required to take part. Any type of bag can be used.

Take part via Facebook and Instagram

Anyone wishing to take part simply needs to bring a rubbish bag on a holiday outing, collect a few small pieces of litter along the way, and then take a photo with the filled bag or an unusual item they have found.

The photo can be posted in the comments under any of the competition posts on the Facebook or Instagram pages of 4camping or Ukliďme Česko. Information about the current challenge can be found on the Ukliďme Česko website.

The campaign deliberately avoids blaming people. Instead, it aims to encourage visitors to leave nature a little cleaner than they found it with just a few simple actions.

After all, even one less plastic bottle, can or food wrapper can make a difference. And if hundreds or even thousands of people take part, a small habit can grow into a much bigger change.
