Prague to Modernise Tatra Smíchov Rugby Ground

Prague is set to comprehensively modernise the Rugby Club Tatra Smíchov sports ground. The City Council has awarded the contract for the revitalisation of the site, including the grandstand and club facilities. Construction work is expected to take 32 months.

The extensive redevelopment will create a modern sports facility suitable for major rugby matches while providing better conditions for youth sport in particular. The contract is worth around CZK 209 million.

According to the city, the current technical condition of the site no longer meets today's requirements for quality, safety and capacity. “The main objective of the project is to revitalise a sports facility whose current technical condition no longer meets today's requirements for the quality and safety of sports infrastructure, nor the capacity needs of the club's activities,” said Prague City Councillor for Municipal Property Adam Zábranský.

Although the final price is higher than the original estimate, it includes a broader scope of work under the design-and-build model. In addition to the construction itself, this also covers project design, engineering services and construction supervision.

A key focus of the project is improving conditions for spectators. The existing 300-seat stand will be replaced by a new covered stand with seating for 556 spectators. Spaces for people with disabilities are also planned. In addition, the capacity can be expanded by a further 106 standing places if required.

The project also includes new training facilities and better year-round use of the site. Planned improvements include artificial turf pitches, a sports hall and a gym. This is intended to reduce pressure on the main natural grass pitch and respond to the growing number of active players.

“Providing the general public and young people with access to modern sports infrastructure is one of my highest priorities,” said Prague City Councillor for Sport and Leisure Antonín Klecanda. The modernisation will not only create suitable conditions for elite players, but above all for hundreds of children and young people.

Rugby Club Tatra Smíchov is one of the largest and most successful rugby clubs in the Czech Republic. The club has more than 680 active members, including over 440 children and young people. It has used the Smíchov site since the first half of the 1970s, when the facilities were largely built by club members themselves.
