Prague 6 Unveils Winning Design for Kaštan Cultural Centre
Winning design selected in architectural competition combines historic building with modern cultural and event spaces

The Kaštan Cultural Centre in Prague-Břevnov is set to be transformed into a modern cultural and community hub. The architectural competition has now been decided.
The Kaštan Cultural Centre in Prague's Břevnov district is set for a comprehensive renovation and extension. The Prague 6 District Council has announced the results of the architectural competition. The winning design was submitted by the Prague-based architectural studio Atelier bod architekti.
A total of 44 proposals were submitted to the competition, which was launched at the end of last year. An expert jury initially selected nine finalists, who then developed their concepts further. At the beginning of June, the jury evaluated the submitted projects and ultimately selected the winning design.

According to Prague 6, the listed building that currently houses the cultural centre will be preserved while being transformed into a modern cultural and community venue.
"The renovation and extension of the Kaštan Cultural Centre is one of our most important long-term projects. We want to preserve the historic character of the listed building while creating a modern and functional cultural centre for the 21st century," said the Mayor of Prague 6, Jakub Stárek.

The winning design by Atelier bod architekti particularly impressed the jury with its combination of urban planning quality and its sensitive approach to the site's immediate proximity to the Břevnov Monastery. The project includes the renovation of the historic building as well as the construction of two new buildings housing an event hall and a café.

"The winning design combines the historic fabric of today's Kaštan with two new buildings to create a functional complex. The aim is to establish a new cultural and community centre for Břevnov that blends harmoniously into its surroundings while providing professional facilities for cultural events," said Petr Prokop, First Deputy Mayor of Prague 6.
In addition to the urban integration of the proposals, the jury assessed their architectural quality, their treatment of the listed former U Kaštanu inn building, the design of the public spaces, and the functionality and economic efficiency of the projects.

The designs will not remain exclusively for the expert jury. Prague 6 plans to hold a public exhibition of all competition entries in the autumn. Visitors will have the opportunity to gain a comprehensive overview of the different concepts for the future development of the Kaštan Cultural Centre. The exact date will be announced at a later stage.
