Prague Public Transport Company Signs Contract for New Tram Line to Strahov

Prague is to receive a new tram connection to Strahov. The 1.3-kilometre line will run from Bělohorská Street via Vaníčkova Street to the student halls of residence and terminate at a new turning loop near Strahov Stadium.

The Prague Public Transport Company (DPP) awarded the contract following a public tender to the “Společnost TT Malovanka” consortium. It comprises the companies Elektrizace železnic Praha, FIRESTA–Fišer, rekonstrukce, stavby and PEDASTA dopravní stavby. The contract with the consortium has already been signed.

The bid price amounts to CZK 824.27 million. This is almost CZK 196 million below the contract’s originally estimated value. A total of eight bidders submitted offers. The construction period is set at 18 months.

Preparatory work by other companies, including the Prague Water Management Company PVS, has already been under way in the area for several months. DPP intends to begin preparatory work for the construction of the line itself in the coming weeks.

Double-Track Line with Three Pairs of Stops

The new double-track line will branch off at Bělohorská Street and run along the entire length of Vaníčkova Street to Strahov. There, it will terminate at the existing bus turning loop at the junction of Vaníčkova and Turistická streets.

As part of the project, Bělohorská Street between the junctions with Myslbekova and Vaníčkova streets will also be completely rebuilt. Vaníčkova Street is also to undergo extensive redesign and widening.

Three pairs of stops will be built along the route: Malovanka, Koleje Strahov and Strahov. The Malovanka stop will be shared with the existing tram line towards Bílá Hora.

The Koleje Strahov stops will be located between the student halls of residence and Strahov Stadium, approximately at the site of the existing bus stops of the same name. The Strahov terminus will be built within the new turning loop and is intended to be used by both trams and trolleybuses.

The project is being funded through the EU Transport Programme 2021–2027. European funding may cover up to 85 per cent of eligible expenditure.
