Prague Metro D: New stations to be called Nusle and Ryšánka

Prague has decided on the names of several future stations on Metro Line D. The stations previously known by the working names Náměstí Bratří Synků and Olbrachtova will in future be called Nusle and Ryšánka.

Prague City Council approved the changes on Monday. The aim is to gradually standardise the naming of the new line and incorporate the names into the public transport information and wayfinding system.

“Metro D is now getting its final identity on the maps as well,” said Deputy Mayor for Transport Jaromír Beránek. The new names are intended to better reflect the respective districts and locations while also being as easy as possible for passengers to understand.

The station previously known by the working name Náměstí Bratří Synků will be called Nusle. According to the city, the name is more suitable because the station is to have two entrance halls, one at Náměstí Bratří Synků and another near Otakarova. The shorter name therefore better covers the entire area.

The station previously known as Olbrachtova will become Ryšánka. The name has already been commonly used in the area for decades and refers to a former vineyard dating back to the mid-19th century. In addition, the southern exit of the future station will be located directly at the Ryšánka junction.

Decision on terminus still open

No final name has yet been approved for the planned terminus currently known by the working name Depo Písnice. According to the city, one possible option is the name Prameny. However, the decision is only expected to be made in connection with the further urban development of the area.

The existing names will remain in place for the other planned stations. The following station names are currently planned for the future Line D: Náměstí Míru, Nusle, Pankrác, Ryšánka, Nádraží Krč, Nemocnice Krč, Nové Dvory, Libuš and Písnice. In addition, there is the terminus whose final name has not yet been decided.

The names Náměstí Míru and Pankrác will be taken over from the existing stations on Lines A and C respectively, as direct interchange connections with Metro D are planned there.

Nádraží Krč refers to the railway station located there and the planned connection with rail services. Nemocnice Krč takes its name from the nearby Thomayer University Hospital and the existing bus stops.

Nové Dvory, Libuš and Písnice will also retain their existing working names. For Nové Dvory, the name Tempo had also been considered at one stage. For Písnice, the longer option Sídliště Písnice was rejected.

The Prague Place Names Commission had previously discussed the new station names and issued corresponding recommendations. The Prague Public Transit Company and ROPID are to use the approved names in future planning and information systems for Metro D.
