Birell Grand Prix to Cause Traffic Disruption in Prague on Saturday

The Birell Grand Prix Prague will bring more than 13,000 runners to the Czech capital on Saturday, 5 September. Because of the two races, road users in the city centre should expect extensive restrictions between approximately 16.00 and 22.00.

Both international elite athletes and numerous amateur runners will compete in the 29th Birell Grand Prix Prague. The Adidas Women’s Run over five kilometres will begin at 18.00. It will be followed by the ten-kilometre Birell Evening Run at 19.30. Both races will start and finish on Republic Square (Náměstí Republiky), in front of Prague’s Municipal House.

Road closures along the race routes will begin before the races start. Once the final participant has passed, the individual sections are expected to be gradually reopened to traffic. Traffic management will be handled by the Czech police together with the Prague Municipal Police.

Extensive Road Closures in the City Centre

The lower half of Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí), Na Příkopě Street and Republic Square (Náměstí Republiky) are expected to be completely closed from 16.30 to 22.00.

Between 17.30 and 21.00, Revoluční Street, Edvard Beneš Embankment (nábřeží Edvarda Beneše), Štefánik Bridge and Čech Bridge (Čechův most), as well as Captain Jaroš Embankment (nábřeží Kapitána Jaroše) in the direction of the city centre, will also be closed to traffic. The Letná Tunnel will also be closed during this period.

From 19.20, depending on the progress of the race, temporary closures will follow on Rohanské Embankment and Dvořák Embankment (Dvořákovo nábřeží), Ludvík Svoboda Embankment (nábřeží Ludvíka Svobody), in the Těšnov Tunnel and on Lannova and Nové mlýny streets.

No-Stopping Restrictions Along the Race Routes

No-stopping restrictions will apply along the entire routes of both races. Vehicles parked in breach of the restrictions may be towed away.

Because of the installation of event infrastructure, the no-stopping restrictions around Republic Square and on Hybernská and Na Příkopě streets will come into force at 18.00 on Friday, 4 September. They will remain in effect until midnight on Saturday.

On Revoluční Street, the no-stopping restrictions will apply on Saturday from 00.01 to 23.00. Between 12.00 and 22.00, they will also apply on Edvard Beneš, Captain Jaroš, Dvořák and Rohanské embankments, as well as in the underpasses at Čech and Štefánik bridges.

Changes to Trams and Buses

The event will also affect public transport. Passengers are advised to use the metro instead, particularly in the city centre.

Between approximately 16.00 and 21.30, tram services around Republic Square, Revoluční Street, Štefánik and Čech bridges and Edvard Beneš Embankment will be suspended in both directions.

Tram routes 6, 8, 15, 17, 26, 41 and 42, as well as bus routes 194 and 207, will be affected. Further information on the temporary changes can be found on the Prague Public Transport website.
