Czech Bars and Clubs Fined Millions over Fire Safety Violations

A large-scale inspection of Czech bars, nightclubs and other nightlife venues has uncovered numerous safety deficiencies. The fines imposed so far total more than CZK 5.5 million.

The fire service and police have completed their extraordinary fire safety inspections of nightlife venues. As part of the nationwide “DISCO 2026” operation, emergency services inspected a total of 729 establishments between 12 January and 31 August.

The inspections were prompted by a tragic fire at a bar in Switzerland in January 2026. At the initiative of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar subsequently ordered a nationwide inspection of bars, nightclubs, wine bars and similar establishments.

The inspections focused primarily on establishments located in basements and venues where rapid evacuation could be difficult due to the structural conditions. Among other things, the fire service checked whether the buildings were being used legally, whether escape routes were freely accessible and whether the required fire safety equipment was functioning properly.

More Than 2,300 Deficiencies Identified

Inspectors recorded a total of 2,381 violations. A particularly common issue was the absence of functioning or properly inspected fire extinguishers. Deficiencies of this kind were identified in 341 cases.

A further 288 violations concerned evacuation conditions. These mainly involved blocked or inadequately marked escape routes. In 247 cases, operators had neglected the required regular fire safety inspections.

A total of 393 deficiencies related to fire safety plans and fire-resistant barriers. These included non-functioning or unauthorised fire doors, as well as unauthorised changes to the use of buildings.

Prague Among the Most Severely Affected Regions

Almost 39 per cent of all identified violations were concentrated in three regions. A total of 333 deficiencies were recorded in Prague, 328 in the Pilsen Region and 265 in the Ústí nad Labem Region.

Fines of More Than CZK 5.5 Million

By 1 September, a total of 302 fines amounting to CZK 5.551 million had been imposed. Of these, 104 were issued directly on site, while a further 198 were imposed as part of administrative proceedings.

In 191 cases, inspectors also involved the relevant building authorities or ordered the building documentation to be reviewed. A further 83 establishments originally selected for inspection had already closed or been dissolved.

The final total could be even higher, as several administrative proceedings have not yet been concluded. The Czech fire service announced that it would continue to inspect similar establishments in the future. The aim is to improve fire safety standards in the long term at venues regularly attended by large numbers of people.
