Prague Embankments to Receive 25 New Seating Areas

Prague’s embankments along the Vltava will be equipped with new seating and lounging areas. The 25 seating groups made of solid oak are intended to provide more space for relaxing by the river.

Prague’s embankments along the Vltava are receiving new outdoor furniture. A total of 25 seating groups made of solid oak will be installed, offering significantly more space to sit and relax. Work has already begun and is due to be completed by 15 October at the latest.

The new furniture will gradually replace 21 old wooden benches, many of which are already heavily worn. In addition to individual benches, the plans include two- and three-part seating groups as well as two large “nests”, each with nine places. The new furniture comprises a total of 70 individual elements.

“The embankments are not only transport routes or event venues. Above all, they are public spaces by the river where people can stop, sit and relax,” said Marta Pražáková, deputy chair of the municipal company Trade Centre Praha (TCP). She added that the new furniture would be more durable and better suited to the character of the riverside areas.

More Places to Sit and Lie Down

The project is not merely intended to replace the old benches. The different designs will provide a range of options for relaxation in future. Some of the larger seating groups offer enough space to lie down or spend longer periods by the river.

“It was important to us to make better use of the available space and offer different types of places to spend time,” said Pražáková. The larger installations could be used both for sitting for longer periods and for resting.

Some of the existing benches were removed during the summer. According to TCP, the start of the installation had to be coordinated with the relevant authorities and the necessary traffic measures. The foundations for the new seating are currently being concreted. The first benches are due to be installed next week.
