With the new tram line to Strahov, one of Prague’s most important student districts will gain a direct rail connection. The new link is also intended to reduce bus traffic in Dejvice.

Prague is continuing to expand its tram network. On Monday, the foundation stone was laid in Strahov for the new line between Malovanka and Strahov. The roughly 1.3-kilometre connection is intended to provide the Strahov area with a direct and higher-capacity link to Prague’s tram network.

The new line begins at the junction of Bělohorská and Vaníčkova and then runs along the entire length of Vaníčkova Street to the current Stadion Strahov bus terminus. A new shared turning loop for trams, buses and trolleybuses will be built there.

According to Prague Public Transit Company, trial operation with passengers is due to begin in mid-2028. Construction will be carried out by a consortium led by Elektrizace železnic Praha together with FIRESTA–Fišer and PEDASTA dopravní stavby. The project is co-financed by EU funds.

Three Stops on the New Line

As part of the project, the road layout around Malovanka will also be rebuilt. The existing tram stops will be moved to the section of Bělohorská between Vaníčkova and Myslbekova. In future, all tram lines are expected to be able to stop there regardless of their direction of travel.

Three pairs of stops are planned along the new line: Malovanka, Koleje Strahov and Strahov. The Koleje Strahov stop will be built on Vaníčkova Street between the student halls of residence and Strahov Stadium, roughly at the level of the current bus stops. The Strahov terminus will form part of the new turning loop and is intended to be shared by several forms of public transport.

Vaníčkova Street will be widened for the construction. In the direction of Strahov, cars will partly share the same road space as trams. In the direction of the city centre, however, tram and car traffic will largely be separated. In the area around Strahov Stadium, the line will run on its own dedicated track.

Fewer Buses Towards Dejvická

The new tram connection is intended to partially replace the current bus services between Strahov and Dejvická metro station. This could also reduce the number of buses around the heavily congested Vítězné náměstí.

At the same time, Strahov will gain direct tram connections towards the city centre and to important transport hubs such as Hradčanská and Dejvická. The city expects the new line to provide higher passenger capacity and a more reliable connection, particularly for the student halls of residence in Strahov.

Further Electrification Planned

Construction of the tram line is being coordinated with other transport projects in Strahov. These include the electrification of bus route 176 and the planned conversion of route 191. The new turning loop will also include parking and charging facilities for trolleybuses.
