A two-centimetre layer of snow was recorded on Sněžka in the Krkonoše Mountains on Monday. The first snow of the season also fell in other Czech mountain regions over the weekend.
Winter is approaching in the Czech mountains: A two-centimetre layer of snow was recorded on Sněžka in the Krkonoše Mountains on Monday, 12 October. According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), this is the first officially recorded continuous snow cover of this winter season.
The measurement was taken at 8 am on Monday morning. The data came from the Polish meteorological observatory on Sněžka, located at the 1,603-metre-high summit.
Snow had already fallen in several Czech mountain regions on Sunday. In addition to the peaks of the Krkonoše Mountains, snow also fell in the Jizera Mountains (Jizerské hory) and the Šumava Mountains, where it temporarily settled.
First Snowfall Recorded in September
The first snowflakes of the season had already been observed on Sněžka on 24 September. However, no continuous snow cover formed at that time.
A look at previous years shows that the first settled snow in the Czech mountains occurs at different times. Last year, the first snow cover was recorded as early as 2 October. In 2024, it was recorded even earlier, on 12 September. In contrast, the first snow in 2023 did not arrive until 15 October.
