Tourism in the Czech Republic: Visitor Numbers Continue to Rise – Prague Remains the Clear Number One

Particularly Encouraging Growth in Overseas Visitors

Tourism in the Czech Republic continued to grow in the first quarter of 2025. With over four million guests staying in hotels and guesthouses, the tourism sector is back on pre-pandemic levels. Prague, Karlovy Vary, and regions near the German border remain especially popular – and visitors from overseas are also increasingly choosing the country as a destination.

In the first quarter of 2025, a total of 4.1 million guests stayed in hotels and guesthouses across the country. Of these, almost 53% (2.177 million) were domestic tourists, while 47.5% (1.970 million) came from abroad. Most foreign guests arrived from neighbouring countries – Germany (453,000), Poland (180,000), and Slovakia (163,000). The United Kingdom (131,000) and Italy (113,000) were also strongly represented.

The number of overnight stays rose by 0.59% year-on-year to a total of 10.5 million. The number of foreign visitors increased by 1.86%, while domestic overnight stays grew by 1.07%.

    Long-Haul Markets Catching Up

The growth in visitor numbers from long-haul markets is particularly encouraging. The figures show a marked increase in tourism from distant countries. In the first quarter, 67,000 guests arrived from the USA (+4.3% year-on-year). Visitor numbers from Israel rose by an impressive 58% to 48,625. Significant increases were also recorded from China (+38.9%) and Italy (+7.5%). By contrast, arrivals from South Korea (-3.4%) and Taiwan (-11.4%) declined.

Foreign tourists were especially drawn to Prague, as well as the Hradec Králové and South Moravian regions.

Karlovy Vary Records the Longest Stays

Prague once again topped the list for overnight stays: 1.6 million guests spent their holidays in the capital. This was followed by the Hradec Králové Region (366,000 guests) and South Moravia (307,000 guests). However, the Karlovy Vary Region recorded the longest stays, with an average of 4.75 days – well above the national average of 3.54 days.

Hotels Preferred – Especially Among Foreign Guests

Hotels were particularly popular in the first quarter of 2025. Around 1.2 million guests opted for hotel accommodation – 45% of them domestic guests (523,000) and 55% from abroad (631,000). The largest groups of foreign hotel guests came from Germany (140,900), Slovakia (52,700), the United Kingdom (43,600), Italy (40,700), and Poland (39,000). While guest numbers from Germany and Slovakia declined compared to the previous year, the UK (+13%), Italy (+7.5%), and Poland (+18.5%) saw significant increases.
