The historic tram line 42 is very popular with tourists and locals in Prague. In summer, the timetable will be extended to meet increased demand and offer more journeys through the city.
The historic tram line 42, jointly operated by Prague City Tourism and the Prague Public Transport Company (DPP), is extending its timetable for the summer. Over the next two months, the line will run every 30 minutes instead of every 40 minutes as before, due to increasing demand. This means five additional journeys through the city per day.
“Line 42 is a pleasant and environmentally friendly means of transport that allows tourists to explore Prague without traffic jams – and also gain an unusual view of the city. After four years in operation, it has become clear that this line is in high demand among visitors,” says Jiří Pospíšil, Deputy Mayor for Culture and Tourism.
Whether from the former Austria-Hungary or the 1970s, several historic tram types are used on the route, making the line particularly popular with tram enthusiasts. This year, line 42 has already covered around 30,000 kilometres.
“The ride on the historic tram has become a popular activity – both for international guests and locals. The route is particularly appreciated as it connects not only famous Prague sights but also hidden historical treasures. So far, almost 26,000 passengers – from home and abroad – have used the line,” says František Cipro, CEO of Prague City Tourism.
With a valid ticket, passengers can get off at any time during the journey, visit sights and then get back on another carriage later – allowing them to try several historic models in one day. Those who want to delve even deeper into nostalgia can also use the same ticket to ride the historic bus on Retro Line K, which runs through Strahov and parts of Prague 6.
Tickets for Line 42 are available on the prague.eu website, at Prague City Tourism tourist information offices, directly from the conductor on the tram, or at the transport company’s information centres. Holders of the Prague Visitor Pass travel free of charge, and discounts are available with the Lítačka card. Those who combine the trip with a visit to Prague’s towers also benefit from discounted admission.
The first trip on the historic Line 42 starts daily at 9:30 a.m. in the summer. Further information can be found at prague.eu.
