Czech Holidays: Cyril, Methodius and Jan Hus on 5 and 6 July

5 July is one of the most important religious holidays in the Czech Republic

5 and 6 July are among the most important commemorative days of the year in the Czech Republic. On these dates, the country remembers the Slavic apostles Cyril and Methodius, as well as the reformer Jan Hus – key figures in the nation’s identity and cultural heritage.

5 July commemorates Saints Cyril and Methodius, while 6 July marks the anniversary of the burning of Jan Hus, who championed the use of Czech as the language of worship and is regarded as the founder of the Czech written language.

On Saturday, 5 July, the Czech Republic observes a significant national holiday. On this day, Saints Cyril and Methodius – also known as the Apostles of the Slavs – are honoured. They arrived in Moravia in the 9th century and played a vital role in the Christianisation of the Slavic peoples and the development of the Slavic written language. In 1980, Pope John Paul II named them Patrons of Europe. The day serves to recognise their enduring legacy and their influence on Slavic culture.

On Sunday, 6 July, the Czech Republic commemorates the execution of the reformer Jan Hus, who was burned at the stake in 1415. Hus promoted the use of Czech in religious services and laid the foundations for the Czech literary tradition. His teachings and actions gave rise to the Hussite movement. 6 July is a day to reflect on his work and his lasting contribution to Czech history.

Together, 5 and 6 July are important days of remembrance, paying tribute to the apostles Cyril and Methodius and to Jan Hus. They underline the deep historical and cultural impact of these outstanding figures.

Shop Opening Hours on Public Holidays

Shops will be open on both 5 and 6 July 2025. On these public holidays, the law regulating retail and wholesale opening hours – which normally requires larger shops to close – does not apply.
