The Motol natural outdoor pool in Prague is being modernised: from mid-July, a new bathhouse with saunas and a café will be built. Swimming operations will remain largely unaffected during the construction period – visitors can already look forward to the new facilities next year.
The popular natural outdoor pool in Prague’s Motol district is getting a new, modern operations building that can be used all year round and features an integrated sauna area. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-July and is expected to be completed in the first half of next year. Despite the extensive work, the current swimming season will continue uninterrupted.
“The schedule is on track, so Prague residents won’t have to do without their popular swimming pool this summer. Next year, they will have a modern new building at their disposal. The old one was not only structurally outdated but – like many buildings from that period – contaminated with asbestos. This has now been professionally removed, and the demolition work completed, including the removal of the concrete foundation. Actual construction work will start in mid-July,” explains Jana Komrsková, Prague’s deputy mayor for the environment and climate planning.

The asbestos contamination, confirmed by laboratory tests last year, accelerated the decision to completely rebuild the facility. Suggestions from the public were also incorporated into the planning. The most important factor was ensuring the swimming pool could remain open this year.
Thanks to strong interest from construction companies, not only was the originally estimated price reduced, but the construction time was also shortened. The new two-storey building will be constructed slightly further from the shore and partly embedded into the slope. The ground floor will house toilets, changing rooms and showers, a snack area with guest rooms and a kitchen, staff rooms, a first-aid station, a workshop, and a garage with storage for maintenance equipment. The upper floor, directly accessible from Zahradníčkova Street, will accommodate a café and a wellness area with saunas for year-round use. The decision on who will operate the facility is expected in 2026.
