Number of Road Deaths in the Czech Republic Hits Record Low – Motorcyclists Remain High-Risk Group

Historically, June remains the deadliest month for motorcyclists

Despite historically low accident figures, motorcycling on Czech roads remains hazardous. While the number of riders killed has declined, they continue to be among the most vulnerable road users.

In the first seven months of this year, 218 people lost their lives in traffic accidents on Czech roads – including 28 motorcyclists. This puts the total number of fatalities roughly ten per cent lower than the previous year, marking the lowest level since records began.

Motorcyclists remain one of the most at-risk groups on the roads. Nevertheless, there are encouraging signs: both the number of motorcycle accidents and fatalities fell by six per cent compared with last year. In July, eight riders died – almost half as many as in July 2023.

“During the same period last year, 50 riders were killed. This year’s figure is almost half that. I am confident that we are on the right path to further improving road safety,” said Transport Minister Martin Kupka.

Historically, June remains the deadliest month for motorcyclists, and Friday is so far the most dangerous day of the week – ten riders have already lost their lives on a Friday this year. The main causes of fatal motorcycle accidents remain excessive speed, loss of control, and inattention.

The “Hele, motorka!” (“Watch Out, Motorcycle!”) campaign, launched by BESIP (Road Traffic Safety Department) together with the Czech Insurance Association, aims to encourage greater consideration for motorcyclists. It is directed at car drivers – statistics show they are responsible for four in ten motorcycle accidents.

“With this campaign, we want to raise awareness of motorcyclists on the roads. Often, drivers simply do not notice them. The most common cause of fatal motorcycle accidents caused by car drivers is failing to give way when turning left or at junctions between minor and main roads,” said Tomáš Neřold from the Czech Ministry of Transport.

At the same time, motorcyclists themselves also bear responsibility for road safety: they must adjust their speed to the conditions and anticipate potential hazards.
