The Mad and Merry Men Return with a Roaring 1920s Thriller: The Cat’s Meow

Set against the decadent backdrop of 1920s Hollywood, the play offers a darkly comic glimpse into the world of jazz, glamour, and murder

The Mad and Merry Men return with The Cat’s Meow, a darkly comic thriller exploring one of 1920s Hollywood’s most notorious scandals. Set aboard a fateful yacht, the play blends glamour, intrigue, and murder, bringing iconic figures like Charlie Chaplin and W.R. Hearst vividly to life.

Following their acclaimed productions of A Clockwork Orange and Agatha Christie’s Black Coffee, The Mad and Merry Men are once again venturing into fresh territory with their latest offering, The Cat’s Meow. A comedy thriller, the play takes its title from 1920s slang for something utterly captivating and dives into one of Hollywood’s most enduring scandals—if the rumours are to be believed.

The mysterious death of film producer Thomas Ince in 1924 has long been shrouded in speculation, with whispers of murder, jealousy, and intrigue. These rumours persisted for decades, reignited by both the stage adaptation of The Cat’s Meow and its later screen version featuring Eddie Izzard and Kirsten Dunst.

Producer Gordon L. Schmitz remarked: “Opening the new theatrical season with my 25th production is exciting enough, but staging it on Loď Tajemství, Prague’s very own Theatre Ship, elevates it further. Audiences can actually step aboard Hearst’s yacht, enjoy live jazz from a pianist, and even dress in authentic 1920s attire.”

Set against the decadent backdrop of 1920s Hollywood, the play offers a darkly comic glimpse into the world of jazz, glamour, and murder. Iconic figures such as Charlie Chaplin, Marion Davies, and newspaper magnate W.R. Hearst all converge on a fateful yacht trip, setting the scene for a tale of seduction, intrigue, and deadly consequences.

The Cat’s Meow promises a vivid and entertaining journey through one of Hollywood’s most notorious chapters, with a blend of humour, suspense, and 1920s flair that theatre-goers will not want to miss.
