On the Praděd in northern Moravia, as well as on the Sněžka, the highest peak in the Czech Republic, the first snow of the season fell during the night.
Meteorologists from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) reported on the social network X that temperatures on the Sněžka dropped to as low as minus 1.2 degrees Celsius due to strong winds. On the Praděd, minus 0.1 degrees were recorded, with most of the snowfall occurring overnight.
“On the Praděd, a continuous snow cover has already formed since yesterday evening. More snow is expected on the Sněžka during the course of the day,” the statement continued.
As early as the morning, meteorologists pointed out that the perceived temperature on the Sněžka was around minus nine degrees. In addition, icy fog patches may occur in the mountains.
Elsewhere in the country, overnight temperatures dropped to between six and eleven degrees. According to the ČHMÚ, Thursday is the coldest day of the week so far. At the same time, warnings of strong winds remain in effect, particularly for the north-east of the Czech Republic.
It is not unusual for the first snow to fall in the Czech mountains as early as September. Last year, a light dusting of snow was recorded on some peaks of the Bohemian Forest on 12 September, although it melted quickly.
