A new survey reveals which government coalition Czechs would prefer following Sunday’s election. The most support goes to an alliance of ANO, SPD and Motoristé – both as a majority and as a minority government.
According to the latest survey by the NMS agency for the news portal Novinky.cz, most Czechs would consider a coalition government formed by ANO, SPD and Motoristé the most acceptable option.
A majority cabinet of this composition would be preferred by 52 percent of respondents, while a minority government led by ANO and tolerated by SPD and Motoristé would receive slightly less support – 50 percent.
Specifically, 27 percent of respondents said such a government would be “definitely acceptable”, and another 25 percent regarded it as “rather acceptable”. A minority ANO government tolerated by SPD and Motoristé was seen as “definitely acceptable” by 20 percent and “rather acceptable” by 30 percent.
Other combinations were also considered: a minority government of ANO and Motoristé tolerated by SPD would be acceptable to 48 percent of respondents. A government of ANO and SPD tolerated by Motoristé would gain 43 percent support.
“The entire opposition entered the election campaign with one goal – to replace the government of Petr Fiala (ODS),” said Tereza Friedrichová of NMS in an interview with Novinky.cz. “That’s why, for the majority of Czechs, a government of ANO and ODS or the Spolu coalition is not acceptable.”
Only 19 percent of respondents would find a joint government of ANO and Spolu (ODS, KDU-ČSL and TOP 09) acceptable, while a coalition of ANO and ODS would be supported by just 17 percent.
A slightly higher level of acceptance – 29 percent – was recorded for a potential ANO–STAN coalition. Interestingly, Friedrichová noted, such a government would be acceptable to half of STAN and Pirate Party voters.
A majority government without ANO, consisting of Spolu, STAN, the Pirates and Motoristé, would also receive 29 percent support, according to the survey. Among Spolu, STAN and Pirate voters, seven in ten would view such cooperation positively – yet supporters of Motoristé would mostly reject it. Only ten percent of them would find this alliance acceptable, according to the researchers’ analysis.
In the parliamentary elections held last weekend, Andrej Babiš’s ANO movement emerged as the clear winner but fell short of an absolute majority. In total, six parties have entered the Chamber of Deputies – with a record turnout of almost 69 percent.
