Prague Plans New Tram Line Malovanka – Strahov: DPP Launches Tender

Planned construction start is spring 2026, with the line expected to be operational by autumn 2027

The Prague Public Transport Company (DPP) is launching the tender for the new tram line Malovanka – Strahov. Construction is planned to begin in spring 2026. The 1.3-kilometre line is intended to relieve bus traffic and make local public transport more efficient.

This week, the Prague Public Transport Company (Dopravní podnik hl. m. Prahy, DPP) launched the tender for the construction of the new tram line Malovanka – Strahov. Following the Olšanská – Habrová and Libuš – Nové Dvory projects, this is already the third line for which DPP is seeking a contractor this year. Construction is planned to start in spring 2026, with the line expected to be operational by autumn 2027.

The new, double-track 1.3-kilometre tram line will run from Bělohorska Street along the entire length of Vaníčkova Street to Strahov, serving the student dormitories and connecting to the existing bus terminus at the Vaníčkova / Turistická junction. The line will terminate at the “Stadion Strahov” loop. The project also includes a complete reconstruction of Bělohorska Street between the Myslbekova and Vaníčkova junctions, as well as the upgrading of Vaníčkova Street. The construction of the new tram line will be closely coordinated with the electrification of bus routes 176 and 191.

“With the opening of the line, the existing bus service from Strahov to the Dejvická metro station can be replaced by a more efficient, locally emission-free tram that is better separated from private traffic. This will not only reduce bus traffic on Vaníčkova Street and its environmental impact, but also speed up and improve the reliability of public transport, particularly during peak hours. At the same time, the number of buses in the heavily congested Vítězné náměstí area will decrease,” explains Jan Šurovský, Deputy Chairman and Technical Director of the Transport Company – Surface Operations.

For the construction of the new tram line, the Prague Public Transport Company has received funding from the European Fund under the Transport 2021–2027 programme, covering up to 85 per cent of eligible expenses.
