    ANO, SPD and Motoristé Reach Agreement on Ministerial Portfolios for Prospective Government

    The cabinet will in future consist of a total of 16 members, including the Prime Minister

    The Czech parties ANO, SPD and Motoristé have agreed on the ministerial posts of the new government. In total, the cabinet will comprise 16 members, including the Prime Minister. Negotiations on the programme priorities are set to continue next week.

    ANO, SPD and Motoristé have agreed on the division of portfolios in the newly forming Czech government. The cabinet will in future consist of a total of 16 members, including the Prime Minister. According to the agreement, ANO will receive nine ministerial posts, including the Prime Minister, SPD three and Motoristé four. In addition, the chairmanship of the Chamber of Deputies will go to SPD. Talks on the programme priorities are to continue next week, the parties said in a joint press release. President Pavel had previously announced that he would only appoint the new Prime Minister after the constitution of the new Chamber of Deputies, whose first session is scheduled for 3 November.

    In addition to the position of Prime Minister, ANO will take on the portfolios for Finance, Industry, Health, Labour, Education, Interior, Regional Development and Justice. SPD will provide the ministers for Defence, Agriculture and Transport. According to news channel ČT24, negotiations were particularly complicated regarding the allocation of portfolios to Motoristé. Motoristé are expected to take the ministries for Foreign Affairs, Culture, Environment as well as a newly created portfolio for Sport, Prevention and Health.

    In the new government, there will be no separate ministries for EU Affairs, the Legislature or Science. Consultations on the substantive priorities are to continue next week.

    The ANO movement of Andrej Babiš emerged as the clear winner of the Czech parliamentary elections on 3 and 4 October, but fell short of an absolute majority. In total, six parties will enter the Chamber of Deputies.
