Spartanská Krev: When Fans Become Lifesavers by Donating Blood

Another goal of the campaign is to encourage more people to register as potential bone marrow donors

The 19th edition of the “Spartanská Krev” campaign – the country’s oldest charitable sports initiative – is underway in Prague. Fans of HC Sparta Praha are donating blood to save lives, receiving not only thanks but also tickets to a home match of HC Sparta Praha in return.

In Prague, “Spartanská Krev” is flowing once again – quite literally. The oldest charitable sports project in the Czech Republic is entering its 19th year. Since 2007, the campaign has united fans of HC Sparta Praha in a good cause: donating blood to save lives. And it’s proving ever more successful. Last season, three times as many donors took part compared to previous years – a record result the organisers hope to surpass this year.

New this year is the expansion of the campaign to include all Prague hospitals with transfusion departments – and blood donors in the Bohemian town of Hořovice can also take part. From 2 November to 7 December, all donors will receive a voucher for a ticket to HC Sparta Praha’s home match against Karlovy Vary – a small token of appreciation for their contribution.

Blood can be donated at the following facilities:

A special highlight are the joint blood donation days held directly in the vicinity of Sparta Praha’s A-team – in the Sportovní hala Fortuna in Holešovice. These will take place on 3, 4 and 5 November. Fans using the HC Sparta+ app can be the first to register there (under Vstupenky – Ostatní).

Regular donors can also apply for a “Sparťanská krev” donor card. After each confirmed donation appointment, the card is stamped at the respective transfusion centre. Loyal donors can look forward to small gifts from the HC Sparta Praha fan shop.

Another key goal of the campaign is to get more people to register as potential bone marrow donors. Contrary to what many believe, the process is now very simple: it starts with a straightforward cheek swab – and even if a match is found, the subsequent procedure is similar to an ordinary blood donation.

Through this initiative, Sparta Praha shows that sporting solidarity goes far beyond the pitch – straight to the heart and veins of the city.
