The Prague city government has approved the draft budget for 2026. With expenditures of around 120 billion Czech koruna, the capital plans record investments, particularly in transport, education and infrastructure.
The Prague City Council has approved the draft budget for 2026. For the coming year, the city expects revenues of 116.4 billion koruna and expenditures of 119.1 billion koruna. The deficit of 2.7 billion koruna is to be covered from long-term investment reserves. The final decision will be made by the City Assembly on Thursday, 11 December 2025.
Prague plans 23 billion koruna for investments next year – the highest amount in the city’s history. Around 45 per cent of the sum will go to the transport sector. Major projects include the continued construction of the new Metro Line D, the expansion of the central wastewater treatment plant, the comprehensive renovation of the Vinohrady Theatre, and the construction of a new primary and secondary school in the Březiněves district.
“The budget for 2026 is designed to ensure that Prague remains a stable, predictable and well-managed city even at a time when record investments are required. We are focusing on transport, education and safety – the areas that determine the quality of life for Prague’s residents. As a city, we must continue to invest in infrastructure, while at the same time managing responsibly and keeping future obligations in mind,” said Bohuslav Svoboda, Mayor of Prague.
Operating expenditures exceed 96 billion koruna. The largest item is transport: costs here will rise by three per cent to 31 billion koruna. Of this, 25 billion will go to public transport. The remainder covers road maintenance, cleaning services and other necessary services for the daily operation of the city.
The second-largest area is education. Due to a change in methodology, expenditures are formally shifted, but in practice, funds will increase significantly: from 2026, the capital will fund non-teaching staff in the city districts. This increases the so-called “cash operations” item to 13.6 billion koruna, of which 10.5 billion will go directly to the districts for education. In addition, Prague is strengthening programmes in social services, culture and sport – together more than three billion koruna.
