Snow for Christmas? The Chances of a White Christmas 2025 in the Czech Republic

From Prague to Liberec to Ostrava: An analysis of the past 25 years shows where you can expect snow over the festive season

White Christmas 2025: An analysis by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute of the past 25 years shows which places in the Czech Republic have the highest chances of snow for Christmas this year.

Even before the first concrete weather forecasts for the Christmas period are available, there is – as every year – an updated overview of the probability of a white Christmas in the Czech Republic. The analysis is based on data from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) from 2000 to 2024.

For the purposes of the analysis, a “white Christmas” is considered to occur if there is at least one centimetre of snow on the ground at a weather station at 7 a.m. on 24 or 25 December.

Low-lying areas: low chance of snow

In the lowest-lying regions – such as South Moravia, the south-west of the Plzeň Region, and the surroundings of Prague or České Budějovice – the probability of a white Christmas is below 20 per cent. In these warmer areas, snow at Christmas is rather the exception.

In slightly elevated areas, the probability rises to 30–40 per cent. These regions benefit from slightly cooler temperatures and occasionally higher amounts of precipitation.

Higher areas: almost certain white Christmas

Areas between 600 and 800 metres above sea level reach values between 40 and 60 per cent. Here, lower temperatures and regular snowfall provide much more stable conditions. On peaks over 1,000 metres, white Christmases are almost guaranteed. The probability exceeds 80 per cent, and along the ridges in the border mountains even 90 per cent.

Chances (in %) of a white Christmas by regional capitals:

    1. Liberec: 50–60 %
    2. Karlovy Vary: 30–40 %
    3. Jihlava: 30–40 %
    4. Zlín: approx. 40 %
    5. Ostrava: approx. 30 %
    6. Ústí nad Labem: approx. 30 %
    7. Olomouc: 20–30 %
    8. Brno: 20–30 %
    9. České Budějovice: up to 20 %
    10. Prague: up to 20 %
    11. Pardubice: up to 20 %
    12. Hradec Králové: up to 20 %
    13. Plzeň: up to 20 %
