Prague intends to acquire the listed Národní dům na Vinohradech for 399 million crowns and has secured the winning bid in an auction. The acquisition is intended to safeguard a culturally significant property in the long term and further strengthen the position of the Czech capital as a cultural centre.
The City of Prague is set to acquire the Národní dům na Vinohradech (National House in Vinohrady). The purchase was unanimously approved by the city councillors, but final approval is still required from the city assembly. The bid was secured as part of an auction, with the purchase price set at 399 million crowns.
According to Prague City Councillor for Property, Legislation and Transparency, Adam Zábranský, the city has had a long-standing interest in the property. The building holds significant cultural value and could contribute to further strengthening Prague’s role as a modern cultural metropolis. In terms of its function, it is comparable to the municipally owned Obecní dům. The Prague 2 district also supports the planned acquisition.
The property is a listed, four-storey Neo-Renaissance building dating from 1893 to 1894. It includes representative halls, spaces for sporting activities, rehearsal rooms, catering facilities, offices, as well as other administrative and technical amenities.
Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda also views the step positively. The acquisition opens up the possibility of securing an important cultural institution in the long term and developing it responsibly. The purchase could strengthen the city’s cultural infrastructure and contribute to the preservation of its historical heritage.
The sale was initiated in March by the Úřad pro zastupování státu ve věcech majetkových (Office for the Representation of the State in Property Affairs | ÚZSVM) as part of a public selection procedure with an electronic auction. The City of Prague exercised its right to match the highest bid. The final completion of the purchase remains subject to approval by the Prague City Assembly.
