On Wednesday, speed will once again be in sharper focus on roads across the Czech Republic: during the nationwide Speed Marathon, police will carry out checks at more than 1,000 locations.

On 15 April 2026, the police in the Czech Republic will once again conduct the so-called Speed Marathon. As part of the nationwide road safety operation, hundreds of officers will monitor speeds at more than 1,000 locations. The aim is to reduce risk on particularly dangerous road sections and to improve road safety.

The operation is part of a Europe-wide initiative under the umbrella of ROADPOL. The focus is on enforcing the applicable speed limits, particularly in locations considered high-risk. According to the police, the selection of control points is based not only on their own analyses and experience, but also on input from the public.

Public interest in the operation was high again this year. According to police figures, more than 16,000 suggestions for possible control locations were submitted, and over 167,000 votes were cast. Participation once again exceeded last year’s level.

Experience from previous years shows that, despite the prior publication of control locations, police regularly detect numerous traffic offences. The most common offence is exceeding the permitted speed limit. The operation therefore combines a preventive approach with targeted checks in road traffic.

In the run-up to the event, the police also explicitly warned against the use of so-called radar detectors. Some of these devices or systems are prohibited by law and may result in substantial fines for drivers.

The Speed Marathon is regarded as one of the largest road safety operations of the year in the Czech Republic. From the police perspective, the combination of public participation, targeted checks and Europe-wide cooperation helps to place greater emphasis on risky behaviour in road traffic.
