Between history, culture and typical Žižkov flair, Praha 3 will mark a special anniversary of the historic district this May. Visitors can look forward to a varied programme featuring concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions and rides on historic trams.
The Prague district of Praha 3 will commemorate an important chapter in its history this May: 145 years ago, Žižkov was officially granted city status. To mark the occasion, an extensive cultural and events programme has been prepared.
Žižkov was granted city status on 15 May 1881 by Emperor Franz Joseph I. Today, the historic district is considered one of the best-known neighbourhoods in the Czech capital and is particularly recognised for its distinctive atmosphere, historic architecture and cultural diversity.

“Žižkov is a place with a unique history and a special atmosphere. The anniversary is not only an opportunity to celebrate the past, but also to strengthen the relationship between residents and their district,” said the Mayor of Praha 3, Michal Vronský.
The anniversary programme combines music, theatre, history and guided city walks and is aimed at visitors of all generations. According to Councillor for Culture Pavel Křeček, the focus will not be solely on historical retrospectives, but equally on experiencing the district as a living part of the city.
The celebrations will open on 12 May with a gala concert at St Prokop Church. Among those performing will be trumpeter Walter Hofbauer and violinist Miroslav Vilímec together with the Harmonia Praga Orchestra under the direction of Štefan Britvík.

For theatre enthusiasts, the Žižkovské divadlo Járy Cimrmana will stage the performance “Pan Žižka aneb Tenkrát na Vítkově” by Divadlo AQUALUNG on 18 May. The production approaches the figure of Hussite leader Jan Žižka with humour and a modern perspective on history.
The programme will also include architectural walks focusing on the history of Žižkov and its town hall. Visitors will gain insight into the transformation of the former working-class district into a modern part of Prague. In addition, the publication “Žižkovská asanace” will be presented on 20 May. Accompanying the launch will be an exhibition documenting the transformation of Žižkov from its former vineyards into today’s urban district.
The celebrations will conclude on 23 May with rides on historic trams. The special journeys will pass through Žižkov, Vinohrady and the New Town, offering participants a distinctive view of Prague’s historic districts.
