Prague will host the Royal Golf & Polo Cup for the first time this summer. The international tournament, which combines golf and horse polo, will take place on 8 August 2026 at the Prague City Golf complex in Zbraslav. Several of the best professional polo players from Europe and South America are expected to attend.

The Czech capital will therefore host the event for the first time, after it was previously held in Mariánské Lázně. According to the organisers, the event is intended to combine sport, social activities and entertainment, while also attracting new audiences to polo.

“Even at the first tournament in 2018, our goal was to build a traditional event for the whole family,” said co-founder and active polo player Simona Joklová. The move to Prague was described as a logical step towards establishing the Royal Golf & Polo Cup as a long-term European-format event.

On the final day on Saturday, the venue will also be open to the public. In addition to the matches, an extensive accompanying programme is planned. A total of four teams will compete this year. Confirmed participants include players from Argentina, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium.

Among the participants is British professional Brad Rainford-Blackett, who has already taken part in the tournament twice and will arrive in Prague this time as defending champion. The experienced player and coach particularly praised the organisation of the event as well as the sporting level within the Central European polo scene.

The organisers are also introducing an adapted and more spectator-friendly playing concept. Instead of the traditional four-player teams, sides will compete with three players each. Matches will be played in a specially designed 150 × 85-metre grass arena with high sideboards, intended to give spectators a direct view of the action.

There will also be changes to the equipment. Instead of a hard plastic ball, a leather ball will be used. According to the organisers, this is expected to improve both horse safety and the dynamics of the game.

“We want to create a polo format for the 21st century – safer for the horses, more attractive for the players and easier to understand for spectators seeing the sport for the first time,” said co-organiser Jan Zavázal from the Czech Polo Players Association.

Alongside the polo tournament, a golf tournament in a Pro-Am format is also planned. The aim is to introduce the traditional sport to a broader audience and, in the long term, establish a similar tradition to that found in other European capitals.

The organiser is the Perinvest Group, which is already involved in several international sports projects. These include WTA tennis tournaments and major international ice hockey events.

Polo Also Growing in Importance in the Czech Republic

Polo has historical roots in the Bohemian lands dating back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. However, the modern development of the sport in the Czech Republic only began around two decades ago.

According to the Czech Polo Players Association, there are now around 50 active players across five clubs. Polo is played near Kadaň, in Zlín, and in the areas around Prague and Brno.

The polo community also remembers the sport’s Olympic history. Czechoslovak polo player Oldřich Ferdinand Kinský served as a referee during the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin in a match between Mexico and England.
