The new Hydropolis water education centre in Prague’s Vinohrady district is steadily taking shape. Project officials currently expect the facility to open to visitors in autumn 2027.

Construction work on the future Hydropolis information and education centre in Prague continues to make progress. During an inspection day on 12 June, representatives of the city and Pražská vodohospodářská společnost (PVS) reviewed the current status of the project, which is being developed within a protected historic water reservoir in Prague’s Vinohrady district.

According to PVS, significant progress has already been made on the future visitor centre. Between the Hydropolis building and the still-operational water reservoir, the structural framework of the information centre has been completed. Work is currently underway on the passageways leading to the exhibition area, as well as on a distinctive concrete staircase that is expected to become one of the building’s key architectural features.

Construction work has also advanced considerably in the operations building. Among other developments, the reception area, catering facilities for the conference hall and an additional level within the event hall have been completed. Progress is now clearly visible from the street, with scaffolding already in place and restoration specialists having begun cleaning the historic façade.

In the area of the future exhibition reservoir, extensive waterproofing work was carried out following the removal of the soil layer from the roof. Preparations are also under way for a concrete wall that will eventually feature the “Hydropolis” inscription. Inside the reservoir, damaged plaster surfaces are currently being removed and structural connections to the operations building are being created.

According to project officials, all work must be closely coordinated with heritage preservation authorities. This applies both to the design of windows and doors and to the selection of construction materials.

Alongside the construction work, preparations for the exhibition content are also progressing. According to those responsible for the project, it is currently in the final phase of developing its technical and educational concepts. Educational programmes for schools are also being prepared, while the overall visitor experience is being planned in detail.

Compared with the original schedule, the project has experienced a slight delay. Based on current plans, installation of the exhibition is expected to begin by the end of this year. The official opening of Hydropolis to the public is now scheduled for autumn 2027.
