Extensive roadworks will begin in early July on an important alternative route serving Prague’s still incomplete ring road. Through the complete reconstruction of Kbelská Street, the city aims to secure the long-term functionality of this heavily used transit corridor.

One of Prague’s most important transport arteries will be affected by major roadworks during the summer holidays. Following a short preparatory phase, the reconstruction of Kbelská Street will begin on the night of 2 July. To limit the duration of disruptions to 45 days, work will be carried out around the clock. The road is scheduled to fully reopen by mid-August.

Kbelská Street connects the D8, D10 and D11 motorways and therefore plays a key role as a substitute route for the still missing section of the Prague Ring Road. According to the city and the Technical Road Administration (TSK), the reconstruction is necessary to ensure the long-term stability and safety of the transport link. Without the works, significantly greater restrictions could arise in the future due to the deteriorating condition of the road surface.

During the construction phases, up to 250 workers will be deployed simultaneously on the major building site. Prague is relying on continuous 24-hour operations, seven days a week, in order to keep the construction period as short as possible.

Preparatory works will begin between 22 and 30 June. These include the installation of temporary traffic signs and parking restrictions along the designated diversion routes, particularly on Kolbenova and Prosecká streets. In addition, dedicated lanes for buses operating within the Prague Integrated Transport (PID) system will be introduced to minimise delays to public transport services.

The main construction works will begin on the night of 2 July. Traffic will then operate in a so-called “tunnel mode”. Under this arrangement, one lane in each direction will remain open on one carriageway, while the opposite carriageway will be completely closed for construction works.

Several entry and exit ramps, including connections from Prosecká and Mladoboleslavská streets, will be fully closed during the works. As a result, direct access to neighbouring areas from the construction zone will not be possible.

The city is also taking the start of the summer holidays into account. On Friday, 26 June, all preparatory works will be suspended from midday to allow holiday traffic to leave the city with minimal disruption. The works and the phased closure of ramps will resume on 1 July after the expected peak in traffic has passed.
