With the distribution of end-of-year report cards, the school year comes to an end today for more than 1.5 million pupils in the Czech Republic. At the same time, the summer holiday travel period begins, prompting the police to step up their road checks.
For more than 1.5 million pupils in the Czech Republic, the school year ends today. Primary and secondary schools are issuing report cards before the summer holidays finally begin. The new school year starts after the summer break on Tuesday, 1 September.
Around 119,900 first-year pupils will receive their first school report card today. According to the Czech Ministry of Education, more than 1.002 million children are currently attending primary school. For the fourth consecutive year, the number of primary school pupils exceeds one million.
More than one million children are taught at the country's 4,320 primary schools. In addition, there are 1,328 secondary schools with around 514,900 pupils enrolled in various educational programmes.
Children of Ukrainian refugees are also receiving their report cards today. At the beginning of the school year, around 39,560 Ukrainian children were attending Czech primary schools and approximately 9,400 secondary schools, according to the Ministry of Education. Most of them are enrolled in state schools.
The school year was originally scheduled to run until 30 June. However, Education Minister Robert Plaga decided to shorten it by several days. The ministry said the decision was based on the organisational needs of schools as well as the travel habits of many families at the start of the summer holidays.
To coincide with the start of the summer holidays, the police are also increasing their presence on the roads. Enhanced traffic checks will take place on Friday and Saturday. The main focus will be on major roads and regions with high tourist traffic in order to ensure safe travel at the beginning of the holiday period.
