To mark the 100th anniversary of the legendary marionette character Hurvínek, Prague is presenting a free open-air exhibition in the heart of the Old Town. Visitors can explore the world of Czech puppetry until the end of July.

Prague is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Hurvínek this year. To mark the occasion, the exhibition "Hurvínek 100 – Kouzlo loutkářské dílny" has opened in front of the New Town Hall on Mariánské náměstí. It is open to visitors free of charge until Friday, 31 July 2026.

The exhibition is dedicated to the history of the legendary marionette character, who has delighted children and adults for generations. Hurvínek is closely associated with Prague, where the Spejbl and Hurvínek Theatre has been based for decades. The exhibition showcases the world of Czech puppetry, the traditional craftsmanship behind the characters, and the imagination that gave rise to Hurvínek, Spejbl, Mánička, Bábinka and Žeryk.

A central feature of the exhibition is a glass display case containing original theatre puppets. According to the theatre, these are puppets that were actually used on stage in the past, with some of them still in use today. The exhibition is complemented by information panels, listening stations featuring well-known dialogues, and a competition for visitors.

The official opening was attended not only by representatives of the City of Prague and the theatre, but also by the famous puppet characters themselves, accompanied by their puppeteers. During the ceremony, the city paid tribute to Hurvínek as an integral part of Czech culture and as a symbol of a puppetry tradition that is renowned far beyond the country's borders.

The travelling exhibition "Hurvínek 100 – Kouzlo loutkářské dílny" is open to the public free of charge at Mariánské náměstí until 31 July 2026.
