EU citizens living in the Czech Republic are not only entitled to vote in European Parliament elections. They may also take part in municipal elections, including elections to the Prague City Assembly and the district councils.

Municipal elections will take place across the Czech Republic on 9 and 10 October 2026. In Prague, voters will elect both the members of the Prague City Assembly (Zastupitelstvo hlavního města Prahy) and the representatives of the individual city districts. Under certain conditions, citizens of other EU member states are also eligible to vote.

To qualify, voters must be at least 18 years old, have a registered residence in the Czech Republic, and apply to be entered on the relevant electoral register. Registration is not automatic and must be requested from the competent municipal authority or, in Prague, from the relevant district office. For the 2026 municipal elections, the deadline for registration is 7 October 2026 at 4 pm.

For EU citizens, this means they can help decide both the composition of the Prague City Assembly and the representation of their respective city district. Local government decisions affect public transport, urban development, schools, green spaces, parking regulations, and many other aspects of everyday life. Further information is available on the City of Prague website. Although it is only available in Czech, it can easily be read in English using your browser's translation function.

Which Other Elections Can EU Citizens Vote in Within the Czech Republic?

In addition to municipal elections, EU citizens may also vote in elections to the European Parliament, provided they choose to cast their vote in the Czech Republic rather than in their country of origin. Among the requirements are having a registered residence at least 45 days before election day and being entered on the electoral register for the European Parliament elections. The next elections to the European Parliament are expected to take place in 2029; the exact dates have yet to be determined across the EU. The current scheduled election period is 7–10 June 2029.

However, EU citizens are not eligible to vote in elections to the Czech Chamber of Deputies, Senate elections, regional (Kraje) elections, or presidential elections.
