Significantly More Alcohol Offences Involving Bicycles and E-Scooters in the Czech Republic

Police in the Czech Republic are increasingly catching cyclists and e-scooter riders under the influence of alcohol. Since the beginning of June, the number of recorded offences has been significantly higher than last year.

Since the beginning of June, Czech police have recorded significantly more cases of people operating non-motorised vehicles under the influence of alcohol than in the previous year. Between 1 June and 4 August, 236 offences were recorded nationwide. In the same period in 2025, there were 167 cases.

This is according to statistics from the Police Presidium, as reported by Czech Television (ČT). The category of so-called “other drivers” includes all non-motorised vehicles such as bicycles and scooters, as well as, for example, horse-drawn vehicles and handcarts.

“According to the available data for the period from 1 June 2026 to 4 August 2026, or for the same period in 2025, a total of 236 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol were recorded in the category of other drivers in 2026, compared with 167 cases in 2025,” Violeta Siřišťová, spokeswoman for the Police Presidium, told the news channel.

365 Accidents Involving Non-Motorised Vehicles Since the Beginning of the Year

In the first half of this year, drivers of non-motorised vehicles caused a total of 365 road accidents, many of them while under the influence of alcohol. One of these accidents was fatal.

Anyone who rides a bicycle or scooter under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the Czech Republic faces a fine of between CZK 2,500 and CZK 20,000. Unlike drivers of motor vehicles, however, such offences are not punished with penalty points in the Czech driving offences register. Nor is there any provision for the withdrawal or confiscation of a driving licence.

Central Bohemia With the Most Cases

The highest number of intoxicated drivers of non-motorised vehicles since the beginning of June was recorded in the Central Bohemian Region. Police recorded 54 cases there – more than twice as many as in the same period last year.

In Prague, the figure is comparatively low. Since the beginning of June, police in the capital have recorded just two intoxicated riders of non-motorised vehicles. The ban on shared e-scooters, which has been in force in the city centre since the beginning of the year, has certainly helped in this regard. In Brno, municipal police caught four intoxicated people on scooters and one drunk cyclist during the same period.
