Prague Moves Ahead with Renovation of Kasárna Karlín

The historic barracks are to be transformed into an open urban quarter with cultural, residential, office and commercial spaces for around CZK 1.93 billion

Prague City Council has approved the start of project preparations for the renovation of the historic Kasárna Karlín. The total cost is estimated at around CZK 1.93 billion.

Kasárna Karlín is one of the Czech capital’s strategically important properties. According to the city, the site offers considerable potential for the development of public services as well as cultural and community life. Prague took ownership of the site in 2023 and has since been preparing its long-term renewal.

“Today, Kasárna Karlín is an isolated and closed building complex. The renovation design connects the building with its surroundings so that the entire property, including its street frontage, becomes a vibrant local centre. At the same time, the listed elements and the character of the building will be preserved,” said Petr Hlaváček, Prague’s Deputy Mayor responsible for urban and strategic development.

In the first phase, the site’s main building is to be renovated. The service building in the courtyard, which is currently used by the Kasárna Karlín cultural centre, is to be dealt with separately in later phases.

The plans include new passageways from the street into the courtyard, which is currently accessible through only one entrance. Spaces for shops and services are to be created on the ground floor. Student accommodation could be provided beneath the roof, while studios and offices for various uses are planned for the remaining floors. According to the city, a technology park could also be established there, for example.

The municipal company Trade Centre Praha will coordinate both the project preparations and the subsequent renovation. It will also ensure the transparent selection of planners and the efficient management of the entire process.

Project planning is scheduled to take place from 2027 to 2029. Around CZK 1.93 billion has been earmarked in Prague’s budget for the entire investment between 2027 and 2032.

Through the renovation, the city aims to preserve the architectural value of the historic site while creating modern, functional premises for public use.
