Prague Plans to Further Expand Free Bikesharing in PID Lítačka App

Prague plans to continue and at the same time expand the bikesharing offer within the PID Lítačka transport app in the coming years. The City Council has approved the launch of a new public tender with an estimated value of CZK 50 million.

The new tender, “Bikesharing v PID Lítačka 2026”, is intended to build on the system that has been in place since 2022. Holders of a long-term Prague public transport pass can currently use a shared bicycle free of charge twice a day for 15 minutes each time.

With a new version of the PID Lítačka app, the offer is to be expanded in future. From 2027, up to four free rides per day are to be possible, although no more than ten rides per week.

According to the city, the scheme has become well established in recent years. Since its introduction, more than 3.6 million rides have been recorded and around 100,000 additional users have been gained.

“Shared bicycles have become an integral part of Prague transport and an excellent complement to public transport,” said Prague Deputy Mayor for Transport Jaromír Beránek. With the new tender, the city intends not only to maintain the offer but also to develop it further.

Up to Three Bikesharing Providers Planned

The city plans to conclude contracts with up to three providers. The condition is that they meet the requirements of the tender and that their offered prices remain within the specified limits. The sole criterion will be the lowest price for a 15-minute ride.

The second- and third-placed providers may also receive a contract, provided their price does not exceed the cheapest offer by more than 25 per cent. In this way, the city aims to maintain a certain level of competition between bikesharing companies even after the contracts have been concluded, while at the same time ensuring the widest possible availability of bicycles. Use of the service will remain linked to a longer-term PID Lítačka pass. A monthly pass will be the minimum requirement.

New Rules for Bicycles in Public Spaces

Eligible providers will be required in future to conclude a so-called Open House agreement with Prague’s Technical Road Administration (TSK). This is intended to align the operation of shared bicycles more closely with the rules governing the use of public space. The background includes new municipal regulations for the use of public areas. In particular, the city wants to regulate the parking and operation of shared bicycles more clearly.

The new contract is expected to run for around two years. Its estimated value is CZK 50 million excluding VAT. The project is part of Prague’s strategy for sustainable and active mobility and, according to City Hall, is also in line with the capital’s Climate Plan to 2030.
