Prague’s Petřín Funicular to Resume Operations on 22 September

After a break of around two years, Prague’s Petřín funicular is set to carry passengers again from 22 September 2026. The new fourth-generation carriages will operate daily at ten-minute intervals.

The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) plans to begin trial operations of the Petřín funicular with passengers on Tuesday, 22 September. The first services are scheduled to depart simultaneously from the Újezd and Petřín stations at 7 am. The carriages will then operate every ten minutes according to the regular timetable. Daily services will end at 10.15 pm.

The popular funicular will thus return almost exactly two years after it was taken out of service. The third-generation carriages last operated on 13 September 2024.

A single journey costs CZK 100. Passengers who purchase their ticket through the PID Lítačka app receive a discount and pay CZK 90. Long-term season tickets for Prague’s PID public transport system will continue to be valid on the new funicular.

The new vehicles were manufactured by the Austrian-Swiss Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group based on a design by the Czech studio Anna Marešová Designers. Larger glass surfaces are intended to offer passengers better views of Prague. At the same time, capacity per carriage will increase from 100 to 120 passengers.

Even before entering service, the new Petřín funicular received the German Design Award 2025. The concept combines modern technology and sustainable approaches with playful visual interaction between the two carriages.

The Petřín funicular is one of the best-known attractions in the Czech capital. At the same time, it forms part of the public transport network and is used by both residents and visitors to the surrounding parks.
