Shakespeare’s The Tempest Comes to Prague’s Old Town

Shakespeare’s The Tempest comes to Prague’s Old Town at the end of September. The immersive English-language production will be staged in a medieval cellar beneath the city’s cobbled streets.

Prague audiences can experience Shakespeare’s The Tempest in an unusual setting this September. The Mad and Merry Men will perform the play on 26 and 27 September in a medieval cellar beneath the cobbled streets of the Old Town.

The production transports audiences to a remote island inhabited by spirits and governed by the magician Prospero, who uses a storm to bring his former enemies within reach. Shakespeare’s final solo-authored play explores themes of power, forgiveness, reconciliation and transformation.

Rather than presenting the work as a conventional stage production, The Mad and Merry Men invites audiences into a fictional rehearsal led by William Shakespeare and his actors. The 14th-century vault beneath the Autentista Wine Bar will be transformed into an Elizabethan tavern, bringing spectators close to the action.

The performance combines Shakespeare’s language with immersive storytelling, ensemble acting and live music inspired by medieval traditions. Audiences can expect an evening of humour, romance and spectacle as Prospero’s enchanted world unfolds beneath Prague’s Old Town.

The Mad and Merry Men are known for accessible and imaginative English-language productions featuring some of Pragues finest actors.
