Cinemas Across the Czech Republic to Hold Joint ‘Cinema Days’ for the First Time

Cinemas across the country are joining forces for the first time: during ‘Cinema Days’, venues in 141 towns and cities will screen current premieres, major audience favourites and restored classics. A total of 192 cinemas with 467 screens are taking part in the nationwide event.

The first nationwide ‘Cinema Days’ (Kino dny) will take place in the Czech Republic on the weekend of 19 and 20 September. From small, single-screen cinemas and municipal programme and arthouse cinemas to large multiplexes, venues in a total of 141 towns and cities will participate. All screenings will be offered at the symbolic standard price of CZK 100.

A total of 467 cinema screens with 87,351 seats will be available. The programme includes feature films, documentaries and animated films, including more than 20 premieres and previews. Successful productions from recent months will also be shown, along with classics that are no longer part of regular cinema programmes.

The event is being organised by the Czech Association of Cinema Operators. Distribution companies belonging to the Union of Film Distributors are also participating and providing cinemas with a wide-ranging selection of films.

The event aims to remind audiences that a visit to the cinema is about more than simply watching a film. The big screen, impressive sound and shared emotions experienced in a darkened auditorium make it a special experience.

More Than 20 Premieres and Previews

A week before its official cinema release, visitors will be able to see the internationally acclaimed documentary ‘Kdyby se holubi proměnili ve zlato’ (If Pigeons Turned to Gold). The Czech Republic has selected the production as its candidate for the forthcoming Academy Awards. Czech contributions also include ‘Bára Basiková’, which won the Audience Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Anticipated premieres include the Czech-filmed horror movie ‘Resident Evil’, the animated family comedy ‘Kojot vrací úder’ and the comedy ‘Christopherové’. International cinema is represented by, among others, the South Korean drama ‘Hope’, the French thriller ‘Guru’, the drama ‘Opuštěný’ and the tragicomedy ‘Poeta’.

Film Classics Return to the Big Screen

Alongside current productions, several well-known films will return to the big screen. These include ‘Amélie’, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of its premiere this year. ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’, which was first released in cinemas 35 years ago, is also included in the programme.
