Czech Republic Permits Provisional Use of Tesla FSD Supervised

The Czech Republic is permitting the use of the Tesla FSD Supervised driver assistance system under certain conditions. The Transport Ministry has recognised the provisional approval issued by the Dutch vehicle approval authority RDW.

The Czech Republic has thus joined the Netherlands and five other European countries where the system may already be used under provisional approval. According to the ministry, the decision followed several months of expert assessments, consultations and negotiations at national and European level.

Tesla FSD Supervised is a Level 2 driver assistance system under the classification of the international engineering association SAE. The driver must monitor the traffic and the system’s operation at all times and be prepared to take control of the vehicle immediately. Responsibility for the journey remains entirely with the driver.

Safety Issues Examined for Several Months

In recent months, the Czech Transport Ministry has examined in detail how the system works and the requirements for its approval within the European Union. Ministry representatives took part in European consultations, reviewed technical and operational documents and held discussions with the relevant institutions, professional associations and Tesla Europe.

The review focused in particular on the system’s safety, previous experience from its operation in practice and the potential consequences of recognising the approval.

“We took a responsible approach to assessing the system. Our experts spoke with both foreign partners and representatives of the car manufacturer Tesla,” Transport Minister Ivan Bednárik said.

Safety was the decisive criterion during the review. The data and information now available had convinced the ministry to follow the example of the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and other countries and make the system available to interested users in the Czech Republic.

“The Czech Republic is one of Europe’s leading countries in automated driving technologies. We want to create space for their development and gradual introduction into road traffic while ensuring appropriate safety and regulatory oversight,” Bednárik said.

The key points examined included compliance with speed limits, the interpretation of road signs, the system’s behaviour in different traffic situations and the driver’s control over the vehicle.

Approval Originates from the Netherlands

The Czech decision is based on the provisional EU type approval issued by the Dutch vehicle approval authority RDW. It was granted on 10 April 2026 on the basis of EU Regulation 2018/858.

The Czech Transport Ministry recognised the approval in accordance with Article 39 of the regulation. As a result, Tesla FSD Supervised may now also be used in the Czech Republic under the conditions stipulated in the approval.

According to the ministry, the Czech Republic also intends to support further steps at European level aimed at establishing a uniform legal framework for the use of FSD Supervised.
