Fresh impetus for a historic property: in Prague’s Lesser Town, Kempinski is preparing a new chapter for a long-established hotel. Alongside redesigned rooms, dining and local art are also set to shape its future identity.

Prague’s Augustine Hotel is set to open in early 2027 under the name ‘Kempinski The Augustine, Prague’. According to the hotel group, the property is undergoing extensive renovation and repositioning following its acquisition in May this year.

The hotel is located in the Augustinian Monastery of St Thomas in Prague’s Lesser Town. It spans seven historic buildings with a history stretching back more than 800 years. The 13th-century monastery complex is still used by monks.

The redesign aims to combine the historic spaces with contemporary design. LDS Design Studio is responsible for the project, drawing inspiration from Gothic and Baroque influences as well as Prague’s artistic and cultural history. Original features of the monastery’s architecture are to be preserved and incorporated into the new design concept.

A ‘living room for the city’ in the Lesser Town

The public areas are intended to serve more prominently as a meeting place for hotel guests and local residents. Kempinski describes the concept as a ‘living room for the city’. Plans include interconnected lounge areas with a bar, cosy corners and space for socialising.

Works by Czech craftspeople are to be presented at a ‘Collector’s Table’. An artistic ceiling design is also planned in collaboration with an emerging local artist.

101 rooms and suites with historic details

The property has 101 rooms, including 20 suites. In many rooms, the original structure of the monks’ former living quarters, with vaulted ceilings and wooden beams, has been preserved.

Following the renovation, individually designed four-poster beds, historic tapestry motifs, sculptural lighting and bathrooms with a homely feel are set to define the interiors. Several suites draw on figures and themes from the city’s history. The Presidential Suite is dedicated to Václav Havel. The Monastery Suite, the Philosopher’s Stone Suite, the Charles Suite and the Fresco Suite are among those receiving their own design concepts.

New restaurant and bar in the historic refectory

A key part of the repositioning concerns dining. The concepts are being developed in collaboration with Gorgeous Group and Russell Sage Studio.

The restaurant ‘The Salon’ is intended to serve as a salon-style meeting place from breakfast through to dinner. Plans include internationally inspired classics with local touches, dishes prepared partly at the table and a changing wine list.

A bar is being created in the monastery’s historic refectory, with a concept inspired by George Ripley’s twelve alchemical steps. Plans include a corresponding cocktail menu, seasonal herbal infusions and locally crafted absinthe.

Through its ‘The E.R.A.s – Experience Real Access’ programme, Kempinski also aims to offer hotel guests personal connections to the city. At the Augustine, both the still-active monastery and connections with Prague’s artists, creatives and craftspeople are intended to play a role.
