Prague Zoo Celebrates Its 95th Anniversary on 28 September

Prague Zoo is inviting visitors to travel back in time to the 1930s to mark its 95th anniversary. The celebrations will focus on Przewalski’s horses and their successful reintroduction into the wild.

Prague Zoo will celebrate its 95th anniversary on Czech Statehood Day (Den české státnosti). An extensive programme awaits visitors on 28 September. The anniversary celebrations commemorate the opening of Prague Zoo in 1931. Costumes and vehicles from that period will transport visitors back to the atmosphere of the 1930s. New attractions will also be presented, and the “95 Years of Prague Zoo” exhibition will open, showcasing important milestones in the zoo’s history.

Another focus will be on Przewalski’s horses, one of Prague Zoo’s best-known species. The celebrations will mark both the 15th anniversary of the “Return of the Wild Horses” conservation project and the 94th anniversary of the arrival of the first Przewalski’s horses in Prague. Appropriately, 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse in the Chinese zodiac.

Ambassadors of Mongolia and Kazakhstan Expected at the Celebrations

At the Gobi exhibit (Expozice Gobi), representatives of the countries where Przewalski’s horses have been reintroduced into the wild will speak. The Mongolian ambassador and the Kazakh ambassador are expected to attend. Representatives of the Czech Army will also report on the challenges involved in transporting the animals.

This part of the programme will be accompanied by music performed by Mongolian artists under the direction of Badam Bolor. Exclusively on the day of the anniversary celebrations, visitors will also be able to purchase a special souvenir in the zoo shops: a ceramic figure of a Przewalski’s horse created to mark the zoo’s 95th anniversary.

Visitors Encouraged to Wear 1930s Clothing

The zoo is encouraging visitors to come dressed in 1930s clothing on 28 September. Hairdressers will also be on hand to create matching period hairstyles.

Historic cars and a motorcycle will help recreate the atmosphere of the era, along with newspaper sellers distributing a special anniversary newspaper. The entertainment programme will include performances by the Sunny Swing Orchestra and the ZIG-ZAG tap & swing dance studio. The ensemble will also offer a workshop featuring dances from the period.

Further programme highlights include a historical fashion show by Aristokrat Vintage, a performance by Ema Papšová and conversations with contemporary witnesses.

Feedings and Animal Training

Commentated feedings and encounters with selected animal species will take place throughout the day. These will include the feeding of the male lion in the outdoor enclosure. Visitors will also be able to watch sea lion training demonstrations.
