Czech Republic Plans 154 Kilometres of New Motorways and Major Roads Next Year

The Czech Road and Motorway Directorate ŘSD intends to launch the construction of up to 154 kilometres of new motorways and first-class roads this year and next. This is to be made possible by a record budget from the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure SFDI.

The Czech government has allocated CZK 87 billion to the Road and Motorway Directorate for next year. According to the authority, this is the highest budget in its history to date. The funding is intended to allow numerous new road construction projects to begin over the next 15 months and existing major transport routes to be expanded.

Construction is planned to begin on a total of 90.8 kilometres of new motorway sections. This will be supplemented by the expansion of almost 13 kilometres of existing motorways and 50.3 kilometres of new first-class roads.

According to ŘSD, it is currently building a total of 266.4 kilometres of new motorways and first-class roads. The higher budget is also intended to allow further projects to be prepared and existing routes to be maintained.

New Sections of the D52 Towards Austria

Among the most important projects are two new sections of the D52 motorway in South Moravia. Together, they are expected to have a length of 17.5 kilometres and improve the connection towards the Austrian border. One section is to run from Pohořelice to the Nové Mlýny reservoir, with another continuing from the reservoir to the state border.

The final missing sections of the D6 between Prague and Karlovy Vary are also set to be tackled. More than 15 kilometres are planned between Karlovy Vary and Žalmanov via Olšová Vrata.

D35 as an Alternative to the D1

The expansion of the D35 is also set to continue. In the long term, it is regarded as an important alternative to the heavily congested D1 motorway. The final two sections between Svitavy and Mohelnice that are not yet under construction have a combined length of around 35 kilometres.

Two new sections of the D55, with a total length of around 13 kilometres, are also planned. These are the Kokory–Přerov and Napajedla–Babice sections.

Expansion of the Prague Ring Road

Alongside new construction, ŘSD is focusing on expanding existing major transport routes. One particular priority is the D0 Prague Ring Road.

Preparatory work has already begun for the expansion of the Třebonice motorway junction, where the Prague Ring Road meets the D5. The main construction work is due to begin next year. According to ŘSD, more than 75,000 vehicles pass through the junction every day, making it one of the most heavily used sections of the Prague Ring Road.

The expansion of an almost three-kilometre section of the D0 between Satalice and Běchovice is also planned. The bridges at Počernický pond are also to be widened. In addition, a roughly seven-kilometre section between Slivenec and Třebonice is planned for expansion.

Numerous New Bypasses Planned

For first-class roads, almost 51 kilometres of new routes are ready for construction to begin this year and next. Construction of a 6.5-kilometre bypass around Pelhřimov is due to begin as early as November. Other projects include the western bypass of Krnov in the Moravian-Silesian Region, as well as new bypasses around Bučovice, Znojmo and Břeclav in South Moravia.

ŘSD also has almost CZK 22 billion available for the ongoing operation, maintenance and repair of existing motorways and first-class roads.
