UEFA Nations League: Czech Republic face England in Prague today

After their opening defeat to Croatia, the Czech Republic face their next major test in the UEFA Nations League. This evening, Santi Denia’s side host England in Prague.

The Czech national football team play their second match of the new UEFA Nations League season today, Tuesday, 29 September 2026. In Prague, Santi Denia’s side face England. Both teams are still waiting for their first points in Group A3.

The Czech Republic began the competition on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat to Croatia. In their first match under new Spanish national team coach Santi Denia, the side initially managed to equalise after falling behind. Adam Karabec made it 1-1 in the second half before Marco Pašalić scored Croatia’s winning goal in the 77th minute.

For the Czech side, it was their first home defeat since September 2022, following 19 matches without defeat on home soil.

Despite the result, Denia said he was satisfied with the development of his team. The key now, he said, was to continue implementing the new tactical ideas and to improve from match to match.

The 52-year-old Spaniard is experiencing a demanding start to his tenure. Just three days after the match against Croatia, another top opponent awaits in England. The Czech Republic then face world champions Spain in Oviedo on Saturday before the return match against England at Wembley Stadium in London a week later.

Czech Republic captain Krejčí back in the team

Captain Ladislav Krejčí is available again for the match against England. The 27-year-old centre-back missed the opener against Croatia because of a calf injury that had not fully healed. He now feels fit again and is particularly looking forward to the duel with England captain Harry Kane. Krejčí, who himself plays in the EFL Championship (second-highest English football league) for the Wolverhampton Wanderers, said at the pre-match press conference that he wanted to keep England’s top goalscorer as quiet as possible.

England looking for first points after opening defeat to Spain

England also arrive in Prague following an opening defeat. Thomas Tuchel’s side lost their first Nations League match 3-2 against Spain. Harry Kane missed a penalty with England leading 2-1.

Nevertheless, England go into the match as favourites. The team have gone unbeaten in their last eleven away matches.

The most recent meeting in Prague ended in a surprise 2-1 victory for the Czech side in 2019. Vladimír Coufal and Alex Král were among the players in the squad at the time. Overall, however, the record since the division of Czechoslovakia clearly favours England: the Czech Republic have won only one of five matches.
