After ten years, it is over: the Metronome Prague music festival will no longer take place in 2027. The organisers cite economic and organisational reasons as well as difficult conditions in the capital.

The Metronome Prague music festival will no longer take place in 2027. After ten years, the organisers are ending the festival series in its current form. Among the reasons given are an insufficient number of visitors and long-term partners, as well as increasingly difficult conditions for organising a major music event in Prague.

Organisers David Gaydečka and Martin Voňka announced the end of the festival on Thursday on the Metronome Prague website. In their statement, they explained that despite the support of visitors, partners and other participants, it had not been possible to create a sufficient basis for the festival to continue in the long term.

“We are very sorry, but we will not be organising another edition of the Metronome Prague Festival in 2027,” the statement said. For the time being, this means the end of the metropolitan festival tradition under the Metronome Prague brand.

According to the organisers, several factors played a role. From the outset, it had been clear that major festivals in metropolitan areas faced particular challenges. Nevertheless, they had hoped that the existing obstacles in Prague could be overcome.

Too Few Long-Term Partners

In the end, a sufficiently large visitor base and long-term strategic partners were both lacking for the festival to continue on a permanent basis. In addition, the organisers point to the current situation in the Czech capital.

Although there had been a certain level of support from Prague City Hall from the beginning, the organisers believe this was not comprehensive enough to allow the festival to develop further in the long term.

Gaydečka and Voňka also cite the conditions for concerts during the evening and night as another problem. Complaints from individual local residents had made organisation increasingly difficult in recent years. In particular, it had become more difficult to stage the main evening concerts at the desired quality and then offer further night-time programmes in covered areas.

According to the organisers, certain agreements and goals that they considered necessary for staging an international event of this scale in a metropolitan city ultimately could not be achieved.

Ten Years of Metronome Prague

Over the course of ten years, Metronome Prague became a permanent fixture in Prague’s music calendar. The festival brought numerous international and Czech artists to the capital and also saw itself as a metropolitan music and cultural festival.

In their farewell statement, the organisers thanked the visitors, partners, supporters and service providers who had accompanied the festival throughout its run.

However, the organisers do not intend to withdraw from the events business entirely. Instead of a multi-day festival held over a single weekend, they plan to organise various music events in future, spread throughout the year. Further details of the planned projects are to be announced at a later date.
