The City of Prague plans a major expansion of the Aquacentrum Šutka sports and leisure centre in Prague 8. A new feasibility and volumetric study includes, among other things, a 50-metre swimming pool, an outdoor swimming pool, a wellness area, a hotel and a new ice rink.

The largely unused sloping site around the existing Aquacentrum Šutka sports and leisure centre is to be developed into a multifunctional sports complex. According to the city, the facility is intended to be available in future to the general public as well as schools, sports clubs and elite athletes.

“Prague has long suffered from a shortage of sports infrastructure, particularly swimming pools for clubs, schools and elite sport,” said Prague Councillor for Property, Transparency and Legislation Adam Zábranský. The expansion is intended to create a modern and sustainable sports complex at Šutka.

New 50-metre pool and training centre

The study, prepared by architect Miloš Mlejnek, envisages a new main building with a covered 50-metre pool and ten lanes as its centrepiece. Using a movable pontoon, the pool could be divided into two 25-metre sections. A diving pool is also planned, which could be used for various water sports. Training and competition facilities for water polo, synchronised swimming and diving are among the planned features.

The new building is also expected to include spectator stands, training and recovery rooms, fitness and sports halls, as well as cryotherapy facilities. A hotel section with a total of 80 beds is also planned. The entire complex is to be designed to be fully accessible.

Outdoor pool, slides and wellness with views over Prague

A new summer swimming area is planned on the southern slope of the site. It will include a leisure pool on two levels connected by a waterfall, a children's pool and a 25-metre swimming pool. In addition, the study envisages a white-water facility and water slides. An indoor and outdoor wellness area is planned on the roof of the swimming hall. Several saunas, a cooling pool and panoramic views over Prague are planned.

New ice rink for 400 spectators

A covered ice sports hall could also be built in the northern part of the site near Čimická Street. The ice rink is to measure 26 by 58 metres, with stands providing space for around 400 spectators.

The sloping nature of the site could also allow two-storey parking garages to be integrated into the terrain.

Focus on energy efficiency

According to the city, energy sustainability is an important part of the plans for the complex. The sloping roofs of the main building and the ice rink are to be fitted with photovoltaic panels.

There are also plans to increase the reuse of water from the swimming pools and to use waste heat generated by cooling the ice rink to heat water. According to the operating company Trade Centre Praha, this could result in annual savings amounting to millions of crowns.

Around 50 cubic metres of water are already recycled every day at Aquacentrum Šutka. A further facility is due to be added next year, capable of treating an additional 70 cubic metres per day. According to the operator, this could allow 70 to 80 per cent of the required replacement water to be reused in future.
