The popular outdoor ice rink overlooking Prague Castle will open for the new season in mid-November. Children from Prague 7 will once again be able to skate free of charge this winter. Before opening to the public, the rink will serve as a historical film set.
The ice rink on Letná Plain (Letenská pláň) in Prague will reopen on Saturday, 14 November 2026. Visitors will be able to enjoy outdoor ice skating every day until 7 March 2027. In addition to the spacious ice rink, skate hire and other services will also be available.
The ice rink overlooking Prague Castle is one of the Czech capital’s popular winter leisure attractions. The 43-by-20-metre ice rink is open daily from 9 am to 9 pm. Reduced opening hours apply only on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
Although the ice rink will be set up in October, regular public skating will not begin until 14 November. Before then, the rink will serve as a filming location for a film about the Czechoslovak ice hockey world champions of 1947 and 1949, who were later persecuted by the communist regime. For this reason, the rink will have a slightly retro feel this year.
“This year’s ice rink on Letná will have a bit of a retro style. A film is currently being shot there about our ice hockey world champions from the 1940s, who were persecuted by the communist regime. The rink will open to the public on 14 November,” Prague 7 Mayor Jan Čižinský announced on Facebook.

Historical background: Following the communist takeover in 1948, Czechoslovakia’s successful ice hockey players increasingly became targets of the regime. In March 1950, the team was prevented from travelling to the World Championship in London. Following protests against the travel ban, several players were arrested. In October 1950, the communist regime sentenced eleven national team players to lengthy prison terms in a secret trial, on charges including alleged high treason and espionage.
