Slavia Prague sealed their Czech championship title with a dominant 5–0 win in Olomouc, securing the trophy with four matchdays left in the season.
The 5–0 win puts Slavia Prague in a commanding and unassailable position at the top of the table, with a 16-point lead over Viktoria Plzeň. The Prague club have now won their eighth title since Czech independence (22nd overall) and their fourth under coach Jindřich Trpišovský, having finished as runners-up in each of the last three seasons.
The club from Eden (Slavia Prague’s stadium) had prepared for the celebrations, and thousands of fans travelled to Olomouc to turn the Andrův Stadium into a sea of red and white. The supporters honoured the agreement – they did not storm the pitch but cheered from the stands after the final whistle. Around 5,000 to 6,000 fans of Slavia travelled to Olomouc on special trains, buses, and private vehicles.
The championship title means that Slavia Prague qualify directly for the group stage of next season’s Champions League. The official presentation of the championship trophy will take place after the last home game on 24 May against Ostrava.
The second major title in Czech football, the Czech Cup, will be decided on 14 May. Once again, thousands of fans will be travelling to Olomouc – this time, however, it will be supporters of arch-rivals Sparta Prague. It seems that Olomouc is the venue for the most important decisions in Czech football this season.
