Prague Pushes Ahead with Modernisation of its Flood Protection System

Outdated wooden beams at eight locations to be replaced with new aluminium barriers

Prague is pushing ahead with the modernisation of its flood protection infrastructure. At eight particularly sensitive sites, outdated wooden beams will be replaced by modern, mobile aluminium barriers — a project with a total estimated cost of around 60 million crowns.

On Monday, the Prague City Council approved the preparation of a project aimed at replacing the so-called naplavovací trámy — older, wooden flood barriers — with contemporary aluminium systems. The upgrades are scheduled to take place in 2026 and 2027, with overall costs expected to reach approximately 60 million CZK.

“With the replacement of the old timber beams by modern aluminium systems, we’re standardising the technical equipment along all of Prague’s flood protection lines,” explained Michal Hroza, City Councillor for Infrastructure. “This investment focuses on eight critical locations where outdated systems are still in use.”

Prague’s Lord Mayor, Bohuslav Svoboda, also stressed the importance of the initiative: “Prague must be prepared not only for everyday life but also for extraordinary events. Past experience has shown just how vital reliable and modern flood protection is for the safety of our city. The new aluminium barriers will increase both the efficiency and reliability of the entire system — an investment in the safety of Prague’s residents and in the city’s future.”

The upgrades will take place at eight locations — four on each side of the Vltava River. On the right bank, this includes two underpasses in Modřany (U Kina and K Jezu) and two more in the Hodkovičky area (Mezi Vodami and V Náklích). On the left bank, three new barriers will be installed in Holešovice (Za Elektrárnou and two at Varhulíkova), and one in Podbaba (Pod Paťankou).

The project will be fully funded from the City of Prague’s budget.
