In the Czech Republic, 66.7 new kilometres of motorway are being built this year

Most of the new motorway sections will open at the end of December

The Czech Republic is continuing to accelerate the expansion of its motorway network. A total of 66.7 new kilometres are due to be opened to traffic by the end of the year – a record figure for recent years, even if less than originally planned.

The Czech Republic is working at record speed on expanding its motorway network. A total of 66.7 kilometres of new motorways are scheduled to come into operation in 2025 – the highest figure in years, though less than the planned 100 kilometres announced in January. Sections of the D1, D35 and D55 motorways will be completed. Together with the past three years, this will increase the Czech motorway network by 213.9 kilometres.

“Most of the new kilometres are being built on the D35 motorway, which connects Bohemia and Moravia between Olomouc and Hradec Králové. Five sections with a total length of 32.7 kilometres will be opened,” said Transport Minister Martin Kupka.

The first to open will be the Křelov–Slavonín section (Stage 2) in the Olomouc region on 20 November. This will be followed on 16 December by the Hořice–Sadová–Plotiště (Stage 1) and Vysoké Mýto–Džbánov sections in the Hradec Králové region. Finally, on 18 December, the Janov–Opatovec section in the Pardubice region will be opened to traffic.

The D6 motorway is also expanding: since September, the bypasses of Hořovičky and Hořesedly, totalling 14.4 kilometres, have been in operation. In Moravia, a further 7.6-kilometre section of the D55 between Olomouc and Kokory will open on 19 December, while on 9 December the bridge on the Napajedla–Babice section will be inaugurated. At the same time, the final section of the D1 between Říkovice and Přerov will be completed.

264 kilometres of new motorways planned by 2029

Expansion is set to continue in the coming years. “The record pace of motorway construction will continue. Between 2026 and 2029, a further 264.3 kilometres are due to be opened. Next year alone, motorists will be able to use 42.6 kilometres of new motorways,” said Kupka.

In South Bohemia, two sections of the D3 are scheduled to open next year: Kaplice nádraží–Nažidla (Stage 1, 5.8 km) and Nažidla–Dolní Dvořiště at the state border (3.5 km). The D49 between Hulín and Fryšták as well as the D7 near Slaný–Kutrovice will also be extended.

In 2026, the first stage of the cross-border section of the D11 at the Polish border, covering 3.3 kilometres, is to be opened. Construction will also continue on the D35 – including between Sadová and Plotiště (Stage 2) and on the Ostrov–Vysoké Mýto section with the Homole tunnel (13.2 kilometres).

Up-to-date information on all projects can be found on the interactive map of the Czech Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD).
