To mark the start of the year, Prague is once again opting for culture instead of fireworks. On New Year’s Day 2026, the city will open the doors of numerous museums, gardens and leisure facilities to residents at discounted rates.
The City of Prague is once again inviting its residents to enjoy reduced-price visits to a wide range of cultural and leisure venues at the beginning of 2026. On 1 January 2026, nine institutions will take part in the Novoroční dárek pro Pražany initiative (A New Year’s Gift for Prague Residents), offering a variety of attractions. Compared with previous years, the programme has once again been expanded.
Venues offering reduced admission include Prague Zoo, the Botanical Garden in Troja, the Public Transport Museum, the Petřín Lookout Tower and the Mirror Maze, several locations of the Prague City Gallery, the Planetarium, the newly opened main building of the Prague City Museum at Florenc, as well as, for the first time, the Vyšehrad National Cultural Monument and the technological HW Lab.

According to Prague’s Councillor for Culture, Tomáš Slabihoudek, the initiative is intended to provide a calm and considerate alternative to fireworks. The aim is to offer a meaningful way to spend the public holiday – for example through culture, history or nature – while at the same time reducing the impact on people, animals and the environment.
The initiative replaces the former New Year’s fireworks and New Year’s video mapping. Many venues are offering substantial discounts or special conditions, usually when tickets are purchased directly on site. Proof of residence in Prague or presentation of a Lítačka card is not required.
